British Airways Hand Luggage Size 2026

British Airways, the honest version

British Airways hand luggage size 2026

British Airways is more generous in the cabin than the budget airlines, and it still trips people up. On a standard fare you get two bags, but each has its own size, and the free under-seat bag is shallower than most people expect. Here are the official 2026 allowances, checked against BA's own hand baggage page, and how the Explorer 2 actually rides on British Airways.

The official British Airways hand baggage sizes for 2026

Verified against British Airways' hand baggage allowances page, checked 31 July 2026:

  • Cabin bag: 56 x 45 x 25 cm. This one goes in the overhead locker. British Airways does not state a weight figure for it, but you have to be able to lift it into the locker yourself, so pack to what you can hoist over your head.
  • Personal item: 40 x 30 x 15 cm. This is the smaller bag that goes under the seat in front of you, a handbag or a laptop bag.

Both are included on a standard British Airways fare. That is two bags in the cabin, which puts BA ahead of the budget carriers on the free tier.

The part people get wrong

The under-seat bag on BA is 15 cm deep. That is the number that catches people. Plenty of so-called cabin backpacks sit at 20 cm deep or more once loaded, so they clear the 56 x 45 x 25 cabin allowance easily but miss the 40 x 30 x 15 personal item by a mile.

The other one is the self-lift rule on the cabin bag. There is no printed weight limit, but the crew can ask you to lift your bag into the overhead locker unaided. If you cannot, it goes in the hold. So the real cap is what you can lift over your head, not a number on a page.

What fits, and where the Explorer 2 rides on BA

Straight answer: the Explorer 2 does not go under the seat as BA's free personal item. Its base is 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and BA's personal item is 40 x 30 x 15 cm. At 20 cm deep it is 5 cm too deep for that 15 cm slot, so on British Airways it rides as the 56 x 45 x 25 cabin bag instead.

In that cabin slot it fits with room to spare. At base it is 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Open the expansion to 40 x 30 x 25 cm and it still sits well inside 56 x 45 x 25. Either way it drops into the overhead locker, and it is light enough to lift up there without a fight.

BRAW Explorer 2, the cabin bag that fits British Airways 56x45x25 hand baggage allowance

Inside, a removable vacuum bag called the ClipPod pulls the air out of your clothes, so around 24 litres packs like closer to 32. The shell is a 1050d shell with a 900d facing, and there is a padded sleeve for a laptop up to 15in. Land, lift the ClipPod out, and the Explorer 2 becomes your day bag for the rest of the trip. It is £115, from £135, on brawstore.com.

One bag, every airline

Here is the useful part. The Explorer 2's base size is 40 x 30 x 20 cm, which is the free under-seat allowance on Ryanair and Wizz Air and the under-seat limit on Jet2. Open the 25 cm expansion and it goes beyond that free allowance, so you cinch it back down with the compression straps before you board. On British Airways it does not qualify as the 15 cm personal item, so it travels overhead as your cabin bag. Buy once and stop re-reading baggage pages every time you book. British Airways hand luggage FAQ

What is the British Airways hand luggage size in 2026?

British Airways allows a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm in the overhead locker and a personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm under the seat. Both are included on a standard fare, checked against BA's hand baggage page in July 2026.

Does British Airways have a weight limit for hand luggage?

British Airways does not print a weight figure for the cabin bag, but you must be able to lift it into the overhead locker yourself. If you cannot lift it unaided it may go in the hold, so pack to what you can carry.

Can I take two bags on British Airways?

Yes. On a standard British Airways fare you get a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm plus a personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm, both in the cabin.

Does the BRAW Explorer 2 fit British Airways' personal item?

No. The Explorer 2 is 20 cm deep and British Airways' personal item is 40 x 30 x 15 cm, so it is too deep for the under-seat slot. On British Airways it travels as the 56 x 45 x 25 cm cabin bag, where it fits with room to spare.

What happens if my bag is too big at the gate on British Airways?

It may have to go in the hold, and any charge for that is best checked in your booking before you fly. Measuring at home is cheaper than sorting it at the gate.
